PREFACE

Gateway to China is a book written for those who are interested in learning Chinese and eager for traveling in China. There are three parts in the book, language, culture and travel, whose contents are selected from real Chinese daily life. The book consists of Chinese phonetic sounds, characters and words, Daily Life Chinese in typical scenes, general knowledge and traditional culture about China, as well as top tourist cities in China.

The book is compiled based on the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education made by The Office of Chinese Language Council International. With careful preparation and design in the editing, all the texts and characters in the book are equipped with corresponding Chinese Pinyin and English translation, which greatly facilitate Chinese learning as well as enable all Chinese learners to devote themselves to the new language environment more quickly and travel around China more accessibly.

In Part One of the book, learners can learn Chinese Pinyin and Chinese practice in function and situations, as well as the classified Chinese accordingly, each of which provides common characters and frequently-used sentence patterns. In Part Two of the book, learners can understand the traditional Chinese cultures and etiquettes in terms of how to treat people and approach daily routine properly so as to avoid misunderstanding and embarrassment. Part Three of the book introduces Chinese visa application, some tips about traveling in China and overview of some important cities with their climate, tourist attractions and food.

Gateway to China, providing Chinese fans with the omnibearing terrace for them to understand and approach China, can be readily used as China crash course for both self-taught students and training institutes. Learners will have the basic ability to communicate in Chinese language and travel accessibly in China after mastering the contents of the book. All learners, with their increasing interest and learning efficiency, will surely blend in the new language environment and embrace China sooner.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to International Exchange and Cooperation office in Beijing Institute of Technology for their full support to the writing and puhlishing of the book.
